Wonderful Laptop! Minor Caveats.,
by Samuel T. Burns, 2010-08-30

I am extremely happy with this laptop! High quality parts/workmanship (except where noted below) at an affordable price! I had purchased an ASUS laptop originally, but the multitouch trackpad's quality was terrible; it didn't track finger movements properly (even after updating drivers from ASUS support and re-installing the OS), and the help/settings application was written in broken/poor English. After returning the ASUS, I replaced it with this Toshiba model and I'm glad I did! The trackpad has multi-touch capabilities and they work properly! That was one of many factors that convinced me of my new Toshiba's quality.

Pros:
-Extremely fast and agile, I can run a LOT of programs at the same time without much drop in performance (Core i7 with 4Gb of RAM is a huge upgrade for me, and I couldn't be happier)
-Multitouch trackpad has advanced features that make the laptop easier and more fun to use
-Speakers look and sound very nice
-Good size and weight for transporting to/from class every day (important when you take notes and study exclusively at the computer!)
-The main cooling vent is positioned on the left side rather than underneath. I like this feature a lot, since it keeps my legs cooler than my last laptop did.
-The 'Eco-mode' button, placed inline with the media control panel above the keyboard, is a great feature. It allows quick toggling between performance and power saving modes. Not only that, but the 'Eco-mode' software allows you to track power usage between modes and calculates power savings in various ways. It's fun to see how different settings affect power consumption in real time!
-Hard drive protection mode, which senses vibration/movement and acts to protect the HDD from shock damage within milliseconds. I'm constantly using my laptop in different settings, so I'm happy to have 'insurance' against the danger of drops/falls.

Cons:
-The USB ports are all near the front of the laptop. I would like at least one to be near the power cord in the back, so that USB dongles that stay plugged in all the time aren't easily knocked/damaged when moving my hands or the laptop itself.
-The power cord doesn't 'click' into place; instead it's designed so that you just force it in until you can't push it any farther. It feels unnatural, like I'm damaging it.
-When typing on a solid surface, I hear a buzz with every key press. When I press the top and bottom of the laptop together, the typing buzz ceases. That means there must be a loose screw somewhere internally or externally, but I can't find it. The typing buzz can be quite annoying and loud at times.
-The power adapter is HUGE, and it's kind of a pain to lug around. I guess it's necessary to power this computer's HUGE processor.
-Unlike the ASUS I returned, it doesn't have any USB 3.0 ports. Not a big deal, since very few laptops these days do. But it would be nice. In some ways the eSATA port on this laptop is more helpful anyway; my external hard drive doesn't have USB 3.0, but it DOES have eSATA, which is blisteringly fast compared to USB 2.0.

No laptop is ideal for every person or setting. While it's not perfect, I'm convinced that I made a great investment in this laptop! It is more expensive than similar ASUS models, but believe me, the difference in quality is palpable.

One Powerfull Laptop!!,
by Toshiba_A665_6065_User, 2010-07-26

Hi, I bought this Toshiba laptop about 5 weeks ago and this is by far the best laptop I ever owned. It will run just about any application or Game, there is no power loss or lagging what so ever. I have been using this laptop as an entertainment system and it plays all my DX10 games (DDO a online MMO) on it and run's perfect. Games that previously only would run on a desktop computer will run just fine on this system. The laptop has a HDMI output connection, so you can connect the laptop to any HDMI LCD TV and playback a movie on the TV screen vs. on the laptop screen. Since its a HDMI connection no need to connect any audio cables, the audio will go over the HDMI and playback from the TV.

More then enough of memory (4GB), and plenty of hard drive space (500GB) a 1GB NVIDIA graphics card - (this is a great NVIDIA Graphics card the 330M). It has the i7 720 Intel CPU, but with the amount of memory and graphics there will be no lagging or freezing running any of your applications. Not to forget the LED TruBrite 16.0-Inch screen. Its a LED so uses less power and improves your battery life. I get about 2 hours on a full charge, running several applications this is with a 6 cell battery, going to look for a 12 cell battery. Great dolby audio, the audio sounds really good. Perfect laptop design and only 5.8lb for this 16 inch laptop.

This laptop also has great software installed, just to name a few: The eco utility that will lower your power consumption with a easy to use button on your keyboard. Or you will get notified if a new software update is ready for your system..If you move your laptop to quickly the hard drive sensor will kick in and lock down your hard drive so it will not be damaged.

I would highly recommend this laptop to all.

Toshiba A665-6065,
by Gamer, 2010-07-03

I purchased this laptop after doing a good deal of research. I wanted to avoid the limited capabilities of the small netbooks but still get a relatively slim laptop that included an optical drive. I purchased this laptop at Best Buy, literally the first week it came out so they had it for a great price. I've only had it about a week but I wanted to write a review for those in the market for a new laptop. I strongly recommend that you shop around to get the best price and with a few features not offered on the one advertised here.

The model shown here is the black version but the one I have is a slate gray color which really cuts down on the fingerprint issue and still looks very sleek. The area around the keyboard is also the gray color. The laptop is about 1 and 1/2 inches thick and weighs in at just over 6 pounds with the 12-cell battery attached. While the battery juts out of the bottom a bit, it actually serves a purpose and tilts the laptop slightly making it easier to type. It also serves as a handy place to grip the computer when moving it and also improves air circulation. Please note that the one advertised here includes a 6-cell battery so if you can get it with the 12-cell battery, do it. The extra battery life is significant...I can get about 5-6 hours of battery life without using eco-mode and with normal use. The 12-cell battery charges in about 2 hours.

The 16-inch screen is slightly glossy but not so much that reflections are an issue. The display is beautiful...very clear and bright and the settings are easy to modify to suit your personal preference or to improve battery performance. The laptop comes with the full 64-bit Windows 7 operating system installed, which seems to be intuitive and easy to use though keep in mind that a few of your programs and peripherals like printers, etc may not function with a 64-bit system. Use the Microsoft compatibility website to determine if your equipment will work in advance or you may be buying more than just a new computer.

The laptop picked up my wireless network immediately there have been no problems with dropped connections. The laptop runs cool and the fan, which is nearly silent vents from the left side. The power brick is small and the cord is actually a decent length and plugs in on the right side near the back of the computer. There are 4 USB ports including the SATA sleep port. There is also a HDMI port and a headphone jack. Believe it or not, the speakers on this laptop are actually quite good, which is a notable improvement over other Toshiba (and most laptop) models. They are integrated into the upper corners of the keyboard and look nice and not cheap. Granted, if you want exceptional sound, you'll need external speakers but honestly these speakers are way better than what comes with most laptops and work fine for casual listening and movie watching.

The keyboard is the chicklet style with a small gap surrounding each key and it is very easy to use. It also contains a full number pad. I didn't even think this was important but realize that it does make a difference now that I've used it a while. The arrow keys are separate keys located beside the space bar. This does result in the space bar being shortened but it really doesn't pose much of a problem.

The touch pad used on this model is great. It sits slightly off center due to the number pad and is flush with the laptop frame but has a textured surface, making it easy to find, easy to use and very responsive. There are a few features of the touch pad that seem almost gimmicky but I may just need to get the hang of using them. The buttons located by the touch pad are very responsive and don't make that cheap clacking noise found in some other laptops. The biggest drawback to a flush touch pad is the tendency to bump it while typing. Toshiba addressed this issue by adding a small button to easily disable the touch pad if need be. The laptop also has a control panel located above the keyboard with buttons to power down, shut off the wireless, adjust volume, pause the optical drive, start eco mode, etc. Its a excellent feature and makes navigation for common adjustments as simple as the press of a button. You can even choose to have the panel backlit or not.

The laptop has tons of memory, a very fast dual core processor and a fast hard drive. It also has an optical drive with a built in cd/dvd writer which eliminates the need for an external USB drive for watching movies, etc. Other features include HDD protection which senses vibration and parks the hard drive temporarily as a protection measure and it actually works quite well and is not overly sensitive. Toshiba has a few other programs installed but overall, this computer has limited bloatware. It does not come with the operating system disks so be sure to burn a restore copy early on. Believe it or not, Windows 7 actually made this a simple process which literally takes about a minute to complete.

Overall, I am extremely pleased with this laptop and feel I got a great deal for all of the features it includes. Definitely shop around because you can find this for a better price and it includes the 12-cell battery and the slate color which looks way nicer than the black fingerprint magnet.
