Screen dead after 2 months,
by mbiene, 2010-07-29
I was fairly happy with the laptop (N61JQ-A1) for about 2-3 months. The price is ok, it looks good, the perfomance is great, the image fairly clear although the sound/speakers are definitely inferior to other laptops. It was carried around only once, mostly sitting in the office and used 2-3 hours/day. Due to its weight/size it is not the most portable laptop anyway - but that's what I expected. However I would have expected the screen to last a little longer than 2-3 months. While watching news on the internet, the screen flickered a little, and then went black. Computer is still starting normally, but without the screen which makes it definitely less useful. Asus hotline hard to understand but friendly, of course unable to help and issued RMA. Will update how the repair is going.
Flexible Keyboard - Continual BSODs,
by Lotus, 2010-07-29
I bought this computer as I wanted to have a fully loaded, fast, latest and greatest up-to-date computer. Thankfully I still have my 5 year old XP Pro laptop for when I'm without this one. I've had this computer for 5 weeks and have had far too many BSODs to really be enjoying this unit. I'm in the process of talking to ASUS tech support to try and get this issue resolved. The computer looks very nice - looks black, but is actually a very attractive dark brown, and has a nice large keyboard although the left side of mine had way too much flex and made typing very uncomfortable as it rattled up and down with every keystroke - basically a very cheap design I'm afraid. I was without the computer for one of the weeks as it was back at ASUS on an RMA for a keyboard fix - they added padding behind the keypad and it seems okay now. When in sleep mode there are two large led lights that flash - a little distracting if in my line of vision, so I use hibernate now. It boots up very quickly and the monitor is nice and large and the resolution seems fine to me. The sound quality is good and it has a multitude of good features like the 3.0 USB, a large touchpad, an HDMI which works great, among others. However, if I could go back 5 weeks, I'd buy something other than this ASUS - in fact, I would not buy an ASUS now based on the short time I've had this computer and the multitude of days I've spent troubleshooting the BSODs. The computer does come weighted down with a ton of bloatware, but that seems to be the standard with any brand these days. Overall recommendation is that you do your homework before buying this computer - I didn't do enough.
A Good Investment!!,

I've spent many hours researching laptop brands. I wanted a unit that would serve as desktop replacement, and interface with my home theater setup. This unit came equipped with the features I was looking for and at a great price. I bought low when the price was $949.00 on Amazon. Other options I purchased to use in conjunction with this unit included:
Logitech Performance Mouse MX
Antec Notebook Cooler Model 20
Siig 7PORT USB 3.0 Hub
DAS Keyboard Model 5 Professional
4 GB RAM expansion - later returned
Planar PX2710MW 27-inch monitor
This should do me for another three years!!
Rattleing keys and bad resolution for me,
by Mark Thompson, 2010-07-27
The only 2 problems I had with the computer are, first thing I noticed was all the keys on the left side of the keyboard rattled, and that is very disappointing for a brand new $1000 laptop. The resolution for me is terrible. I always see all these complaints about he resolution of this machine, here is why the resolution is important. Real estate, the higher the resolution the more you can fit on your screen, I am a Web developer and I need to have many applications open at once and the resolution on this computer is awful for this kind of work. If you are just surfing the web, this might be good enough for you, but I would not recommend this for anyone who likes to see a lot of stuff on the screen at once. You will be constantly scrolling. The web cam looks terrible on Yahoo messenger, that did it in for me.
The best laptop ever!,

I brought it on April and used it for almost 3 month now. Everything for this computer is great, I just love it!
Asus has the best quality laptop, better then apple, lenovo, sony...This is a great buy, and I'll definitely recommend for everybody!!!
