Outstanding Machine!!,
by M. Walker, 2010-09-04

Acer figured out how to make a great machine at a great price. Bottom line.

Pros:
- Battery life, while not 8+ hours, is well over 7 hours with regular use. Outstanding!
- Lean, slim, lightweight. Great!
- Not overloaded with bloatware!
- Integrated cam for Skype and related video interaction.
- Tight chassis. Feels like a solid machine.

Cons:
- Windows 7 is a great improvement over XP/Vista, but it is stunning the difference in the user experience between a Mac and Windows. I moved an icon on the desktop in Windows 7 on this machine, and lost the DVD drive for an hour. Microsoft hasn't figured out that most people don't enjoy being their own technical support technicians. On a Mac the saying is 'It just works', which is completely right. Give me this Acer laptop with Mac OSX and you could storm the market. I am serious about that!!
- Power connection. Someone please tell these manufacturers to stop making perpendicular connectors for laptops!! Too easy to put pressure on that connector sticking out and eventually end up with a repair/replacement service event for a broken or damaged power supply connector.

I'm giving this machine 5 stars because this laptop raises the bar on the average market. Acer deserves that recognition in this case. Great job Acer!

Generally satisfied,
by C. Zhang, 2010-09-02

This is the 4th laptop I have ever used. I had Toshiba, Lenovo T61, Asus before this, and they all have some good points.
I got this product 2 days after the purchase, and the packing was nice and beautiful. I was impressed by how thin this laptop is, however, its length and width are larger than my expectation. The screen is 14", but it has wide edges, so the overall size is bigger than my previous 14" laptop. The smooth plastic inner surface part makes it looks kind of "cheap".
It is not heavy though, actually lighter than the 14" laptop I bought 3 years ago. I guess it is unrealistic for me to expect it to be as light as a netbook.
I love the input/output ports on its side--it has everything I need and doesn't have anything I don't need. It has 4 USB ports, which is great for me. It has HDMI output, which is the main reason why Ichose it. I could connect it to my wide screen TV, and watch movies from the internet. The quality of the transmission for both video and sound was great. My friend said it was really fancy to use it this way.
The program is not running as fast as I have expected. Although it is similar, or maybe faster than my dual core-lenovo T61, I thought technology should have developed a lot after 3 years. My lenovo had some systematic problems though--the soundMAX is always inactivated, so there is no sound unless I restart it over and over again; and I couldn't successfully backup or restore. I haven't seen any similar problem in this Acer machine. The software for backup and restore was easy to use, and ran pretty smooth.
This product is the quietest laptop I've ever used. I cannot even hear the sound from the cooling fan. And it has never gotten too warm.
As other comments have pointed out, the 8 hours battery life may only last for 5 hours if you're really using it. But it is not bad either considering the thickness.
All in all, this is a compact, well-designed laptop pretty much worth the price.

Great student laptop.,
by James P, 2010-08-29

This is my first Acer product that I have ever purchased. I've been using HP computers for the past 5 years. Although they have great products, I thought it was time for a change, and it turns out it was a turn for the better.

The screen is amazingly clear. 14" is just the right size for any student usage (Word, Internet, etc.) and great for video watching.

Keyboard feels nice. Its soft but still has a firm hold to it.

Webcam is alright. Not too bad for a 1.3 MP camera

This laptop really is light. I hope to have no problems when carrying it in my backpack.

With 4GB RAM, this is one fast machine.

I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a light laptop that still packs a fast punch.

Great purchase,
by Kyle Grimes, 2010-08-15

I have used Dell computers, Gateway computers, Macbook Pro, HP computers, and all have good points and weak points. What makes me happy about the Acer Aspire Timeline X I purchased is that it is everything that was advertised: compact, fast, great thin screen, long battery life. The speakers are dynamic and bright, but small (small speakers just can't give big sound). I have a Dell 17" that has great speakers, but it feels like it weighs twice as much as my Aspire. Internet reception on my Aspire is great! I am very happy with my purchase, and impressed with my Acer Aspire.

Pretty Decent For The Price!,
by Shayne Adamson, 2010-08-08

Pros: The design--it reeks of elegance and style, the size-to-performance ratio, bluetooth 3.0+HS, 802.11 b/g/n, built-in webcam, battery life, it's thin, light and the speakers are surprisingly loud! :)

Cons: It's a fingerprint magnet and the hinges feel a bit flimsy.

Bottom line: If you want bang for your buck, this is your best bet.
